Many servers including Bower Web Solutions’ Linux server now require a more secure FTP (File Transfer Protocol ) connection. Our servers now require a connection known as explicit FTP over TLS or SFTP using port 22222.

FTPS (also known as FTPESFTP-SSL and FTP Secure) is an extension to the commonly used File Transfer Protocol (FTP) that adds support for the Transport Layer Security (TLS) and the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) cryptographic protocols.  You can read more about it here:

Many ftp clients that do not connect via explicit FTP over TLS including Adobe Dreamweaver 5.5 and earlier, should be able to connect via SFTP using port 22222.

The following tutorial is provided as a courtesy to our hosting customers to help you configure FTP  to work with Bower Web Solutions hosting.

While we try our best to assist our customers, assistance with third-party software can not be supported completely by Bower Web Solutions.

Before you start, be sure you have these pieces of information available:

  • FTP username and FTP password. If you are a Bower Web Solutions client and need this information please contact Bower Web Solutions. For obvious security reasons this information will only be giving to the main account administrators.
  • Bower Web Solutions clients should use as the host (also known as the SFTP address, FTP Address and  Server in other FTP clients). If you are connecting to a server other than Bower Web Solutions’ you will need the ftp address.

Bower Web Solutions cannot support all FTP clients and recommends using FileZilla if you are having issues connecting to our highly secure servers.

How to Connect via FTP using FileZilla

  1.  If your client doesn’t support explicit FTP via TLS:
We recommend downloading FileZilla from their site, .  This is off course 3rd party software and Bower Web Solutions cannot offer and warranties or guarantees, but it comes highly recommended.
  2. Open the site manager by choosing file>site manager or  by holding the control key and typing  S. Click New Site ftp-filezilla-settings
  3. Host should be
    Port should be 21.
Protocol should be FTP – File Transfer Protocol.
Encryption should be Use Explicit FTP over TLS if available.
    Logon Type should be Normal.
User and Password should have been supplied.
  4. Choose the advanced tab:
Browse for the local directory on your computer.
For most users on Bower Web Solutions’ servers doing normal web work, Default remote directory will be /public_html.
Most users will find synchronized browsing easier but  instructions on using FileZilla and FTP in general are beyond the scope of this tutorial.
  5. Click Connect to check your work.
Dreamweaver  can be used as well. Settings look like:
